Ayya Aadhimoolam, a distinguished theater actor, shuns the glitz and glamour of films because he prefers the thrill of performing before a live audience. However, despite the growing demand for cinema and other modes of entertainment, Ayya's plays are failing to draw a substantial crowd, causing him immense concern. During a performance of Sujatha's Oonjal, Ayya suddenly passes away, leaving his assistant Parasuraman and his troupe bereft.

After Ayya's demise, Parasuraman resolves to stage more plays frequently. During rehearsals for Panjali Sabadham, Parasuraman discerns that two actors are delivering outstanding performances. During the play, he notices that Saravanan, a budding actor, is not only acting exceptionally well, but he is also bowing to the audience when the curtains are drawn. Parasuraman is convinced that Ayya's spirit is still performing.

Saravanan's exceptional talent does not go unnoticed by Thyagu, a film director on the lookout for a lead actor for his upcoming movie. After Parasuraman convinces Thyagu that Ayya is acting through Saravanan, Thyagu signs him on, hoping to recreate Ayya's acting prowess. With Ayya's spirit channeling through Saravanan, the film becomes a blockbuster, and Saravanan becomes a much sought-after actor. Upon discovering Dhanapal's treachery, Ayya decides to stop acting permanently. However, Dhanapal is desperate to complete his film and puts pressure on Ayya's family and Parasuraman.

After Ayya's family files a complaint, the Producers' council accuses them of fraud and claims that Ayya did not act in the films. However, the family manages to retrieve footage of Dhanapal's film. Dhanapal accuses them of stealing his movie, but the judge orders the film to be played in court. The judge concludes that a person cannot be separated from their art and that Ayya's spirit is present in his art, even though he is not physically present. After the court case ends, a statue honoring Ayya is erected in front of his theater.
