Vattara Vazhakku (2023) English Subtitle - Ilaiyaraaja’s Music Shines in Vattara Vazhakku
Vattara Vazhakku (transl. Local Dialect), directed by Kannusamy Rajendran, is a Tamil-language drama set in the rural backdrop of Thodaneri near Madurai. Released on December 29, 2023, the film stars Santhosh Nambirajan as Sengai Maaran, Raveena Ravi as Thotichi, and Vijay Sathya. Accompanied by a soundtrack composed by the legendary Ilaiyaraaja, the movie seeks to capture the essence of a bygone era with themes of vengeance, conflict, and tragedy.
Set in 1987, Vattara Vazhakku explores the dark consequences of seeking vengeance in a period-specific rural setting. Suresh Maniyan’s cinematography vividly captures the Karisal forest’s raw beauty, adding visual depth to the narrative. Ilaiyaraaja’s score, while nostalgic, is described as underwhelming for the film's intense emotional tone. Tracks like "Thai Piranthal Indru" and "Premai Enathu Oor" provide brief moments of melodic reprieve but fail to leave a lasting impression.
Critics delivered mixed responses to the film. Cinema Express noted the excessive violence and bloodshed, which felt discomforting. The Times of India acknowledged its potential but criticized its lack of impactful storytelling. Times Now highlighted the underdeveloped characters and storyline as the film's primary weaknesses. Meanwhile, Ananda Vikatan labeled the screenplay dull, stating it failed to justify its narrative premise.
While the movie attempts to delve into the complexities of vengeance and its repercussions, its uneven pacing and lackluster execution leave much to be desired. Fans of period dramas might appreciate the nostalgic elements, but the weak screenplay may test their patience.
Vattara Vazhakku is a bold attempt at storytelling that falls short, making it a film that resonates only partially with its intended audience.
