Bharathan (1992) English Subtitle - Tamil Action Drama with Vijayakanth

Bharathan is a 1992 Tamil-language action drama directed by Sabapathy Dekshinamurthy in his debut, starring Vijayakanth and Bhanupriya in lead roles. A remake of the Hindi hit Ghayal (1990), the film combines action-packed sequences with a story of betrayal and revenge.

The narrative follows Bharath, a passionate kickboxer wrongfully sentenced to death for the murder of his brother Ramkumar. The real culprit is Gangadharan, a corrupt businessman who exploits Ramkumar's company for smuggling. When Ramkumar attempts to expose him, Gangadharan kidnaps and kills him. Bharath, betrayed by his family friend and advocate Viswanathan, is unjustly convicted. After a tragic chain of events, including the suicide of Bharath’s sister-in-law, Bharath escapes jail with his cellmates to seek justice. The gripping climax sees Bharath exact revenge by killing Gangadharan, even as the law catches up with him.

Vijayakanth delivers a strong performance as the wronged yet resilient protagonist. Bhanupriya provides a solid emotional anchor as Indhu, though her role is limited. Anandaraj excels as the menacing antagonist Gangadharan, while Napoleon stands out as CID Johnson, tasked with protecting Gangadharan.

Ilaiyaraaja’s music enhances the film’s emotional and action sequences, with tracks like "Azhage Amuthe" and "Punnakaiyil Minsaram" being memorable. Despite its potential, the film received mixed reviews, with critics pointing out its inability to match the intensity of the original Ghayal. However, it managed to complete a 100-day run, making it a moderate success at the box office.

While not without flaws, Bharathan remains a notable addition to Tamil cinema for its engaging performances, music, and the timeless theme of justice prevailing against all odds.
