Released on January 10, 2004, Kovil emerged as a box-office hit.
The story revolves around two villages, Puliyankulam and Veppankulam, which have been at odds for generations. Shakthivel (Silambarasan) is the son of Periyasamy (Rajkiran), a respected Hindu leader in Puliyankulam. Meanwhile, Angel (Sonia Agarwal) is the adopted daughter of Michael Susai (Nassar), a devout Protestant from Veppankulam. Despite the hostility between their families and religious differences, Shakthivel and Angel fall in love while studying in Nagercoil.
When their relationship comes to light, Michael opposes the union and plans to send Angel to a convent. However, in a shocking revelation, Periyasamy discloses that Angel was originally Fathima Begum, a Muslim girl adopted by Michael. This truth forces Michael to reconsider his stance, leading to an emotional resolution that highlights acceptance, unity, and love beyond religious barriers.
Silambarasan delivers a natural and heartfelt performance as Shakthivel, portraying youthful love and emotional turmoil with conviction. Sonia Agarwal complements him well, bringing depth to Angel’s struggles. Nassar excels as the strict yet conflicted father, while Rajkiran’s strong presence adds weight to the narrative. Vadivelu’s comedic relief ensures the film remains engaging throughout.
Director Hari maintains a realistic and engaging narrative, blending romance with rural tensions. The screenplay ensures that family values, traditions, and beliefs are at the core of the story.
Harris Jayaraj’s soulful and melodious music is a major highlight. Songs like "Kadhal Panna" became fan favorites. Priyan’s cinematography captures the rustic beauty of the villages, adding an authentic touch to the film’s setting.
Kovil is a meaningful romantic drama that explores themes of love, religious differences, and acceptance. With strong performances, emotional depth, and excellent music, it remains a memorable watch for Tamil cinema fans.
