Tharunam (2025) English Subtitle - Love, Murder & Secrets – Tamil Thriller Review

Tharunam (2025) is a Tamil-language romantic thriller that begins as a breezy love story but soon spirals into a gripping tale of secrets, crime, and moral dilemmas. Written and directed by Arvindh Srinivasan, and starring Kishen Das and Smruthi Venkat, the film explores how a single moment—tharunam—can change lives forever.

Set against the backdrop of a Chennai wedding, the film introduces us to Arjun (Kishen Das), a CRPF officer on sabbatical, who finds a spark with Meera (Smruthi Venkat). Their chemistry feels natural, underlined with sweet, subtle romantic beats. However, lurking in the shadows is Rohit (Raj Ayyappa), Meera’s obsessive neighbor, whose advances grow increasingly disturbing.

When things escalate, Meera, in a moment of panic, ends up killing Rohit. What follows is not just a murder cover-up, but a test of love, trust, and survival. Arjun, who once served the law, must now help conceal a crime. The narrative smartly shifts gears from romance to a nail-biting thriller, maintaining tension till the end.

Kishen Das delivers a restrained yet intense performance, while Smruthi Venkat portrays Meera with vulnerability and strength. Bala Saravanan offers comic relief without disrupting the tone of the film. Director Arvindh Srinivasan keeps the screenplay taut, and the editing by Arul Elango Siddharth ensures the pace never lags.

The film’s emotional core is elevated by Darbuka Siva’s evocative music. Tracks like “Enai Neengathe Nee” and “Kaatrai Ketten” blend seamlessly into the narrative, while Ashwin Hemanth’s background score amps up the thriller elements.

Originally released on 14 January 2025 in limited theatres due to certification delays, the film saw a wider re-release on 31 January 2025 and has since garnered praise for its screenplay, music, and performances. With a runtime of 137 minutes, Tharunam is a perfect pick for fans of emotionally-driven thrillers with romantic depth.
