Detective Sherdil (2025) English Subtitle - Diljit Dosanjh Delivers Laughs and Twists in This ZEE5 Mystery
Detective Sherdil (2025) is a vibrant Hindi-language mystery-comedy film premiering on ZEE5 on June 20, 2025. Directed by Ravi Chhabriya, this whodunit brings together an eccentric ensemble cast headlined by Diljit Dosanjh, who steps into the role of a quirky, sharp-witted detective investigating a high-profile murder in Budapest.
The plot centers on the mysterious death of Indian-origin telecom mogul Pankaj Bhatti (Boman Irani). What seems like a hate crime at first soon spirals into a layered web of deceit, inheritance politics, and personal vendettas. Diljit’s Detective Sherdil — part Clouseau, part Byomkesh Bakshi — is not your typical sleuth. His flair for deduction is matched by his comic timing and oddball methods, making for a refreshingly unconventional lead.
The supporting cast shines with Diana Penty playing Natasha, Sherdil’s reluctant but capable ally. The Bhatti family is packed with characters each more suspicious than the next: Chunky Panday as the philosophical Bodhi Mama, Ratna Pathak Shah as the emotionally complex matriarch Rajeshwari, and Banita Sandhu as the unpredictable Shanti Bhatti. Sumeet Vyas, Sarah Barlondo, and Kashmira Irani also deliver solid performances that keep the viewer guessing.
Shot entirely in Budapest, the film’s visuals are sleek and stylish. Marcin Laskawiec’s cinematography adds flair to the East-meets-West narrative, blending European noir with Indian family drama. The soundtrack, a mix of contemporary and jazz-inspired cues, complements the film’s tone.
Where Detective Sherdil falters is in pacing. While the first half builds suspense and humor well, the latter half gets slightly bogged down with too many subplots and red herrings. Some twists feel more convenient than clever. However, Diljit’s charm and the film’s entertaining energy rescue it from becoming forgettable.
This ZEE5 original may not reinvent the detective genre, but it adds a distinctly Indian flavor to it, with enough laughs and intrigue to keep streaming audiences engaged. Fans of mystery-comedies like Lootcase or Monica, O My Darling will enjoy this ride.
