Thug Life (2025) English Subtitle - What Went Wrong With Thug Life?

Thug Life (2025), directed by Mani Ratnam and co-written with Kamal Haasan, reunites the legendary duo nearly four decades after Nayakan (1987). This Tamil-language gangster drama, released on 5 June 2025, blends action, betrayal, and redemption across a sprawling narrative set in Delhi’s criminal underworld.

The film follows Rangaraaya Sakthivel (Kamal Haasan), a feared mafia don betrayed by those closest to him — including his brother Manickam (Nassar) and adopted heir Amaran (Silambarasan TR). What begins as an intricate family crime saga evolves into a tale of vengeance, heartbreak, and philosophical reckoning. After being left for dead, Sakthivel returns years later, trained in martial arts and determined to dismantle his betrayers one by one.

While the visuals by Ravi K. Chandran and AR Rahman's soundtrack elevate the cinematic experience, Thug Life suffers from a bloated second half and predictable plot beats. The first hour builds tension well, but the eventual turn into formulaic revenge dampens the emotional impact of the betrayals.

Kamal Haasan, as always, delivers a layered performance, balancing ferocity with vulnerability, especially in scenes with Abhirami (as Jeeva) and Aishwarya Lekshmi (as Dr. Anna). Silambarasan TR is compelling as the conflicted Amaran, who is manipulated into turning on the man who raised him. Trisha, Joju George, and Ashok Selvan round out a strong supporting cast, though several characters are underutilized.

Despite mixed critical reception and a massive reported budget of ₹200–300 crore, Thug Life managed to earn only around ₹89 crore, making it a box-office bomb. Yet, its grand scale, stylish action, and emotional core may still find favor among fans of Indian gangster dramas.

Ultimately, Thug Life is a film of big ambition — one that grapples with legacy, loyalty, and loss. It may not reach the iconic heights of Mani Ratnam's earlier crime sagas, but it remains a visually rich and emotionally turbulent ride, anchored by one of Indian cinema’s greatest actors.
