Madras Matinee (2025) English Subtitle - Story of Kannan the TukTuk Driver
Madras Matinee (2025) is a heartfelt Tamil-language drama directed and written by Karthikeyan Mani that beautifully blurs the lines between fiction and reality. With a clever narrative device and an ensemble of touching performances, this film is a celebration of the ordinary lives we often overlook.
The film opens with Sathyaraj playing Jyoti Ramaya, a retired, grumpy science fiction writer who has lost interest in humanity. Stuck in the fantastical world of aliens and space operas, he is gently challenged by his young caretaker to write something real—a story about the common man. Reluctantly, he begins crafting a story about Kannan (played by the ever-reliable Kaali Venkat), a humble TukTuk driver navigating life in modern-day Chennai with his wife Deepika (Roshini Haripriyan) and daughter.
What unfolds is a deeply resonant journey through Kannan's daily struggles, small joys, and unseen sacrifices. The beauty of Madras Matinee lies in how it captures life's minutiae—a delayed loan, a sick parent, a missed school function—with poetic simplicity.
As Kannan’s story grows, so too does Jyoti Ramaya’s own transformation. His cynicism fades as he discovers the emotional universes hidden in Chennai's narrow lanes and bustling auto stands. Kaali Venkat delivers one of his career-best performances, capturing both the vulnerability and strength of the working class. Roshini Haripriyan is warm and grounded as Deepika, and Sathyaraj brings both gravitas and gentle humor to his meta role.
The supporting cast—including George Maryan, Shelly Kishore, Sunil Sukhada, and Jangiri Madhumitha—offer colorful, deeply relatable portraits of Tamil urban life.
Cinematographer K. S. Vishnu paints Chennai in both grit and glory, while the soulful score by Raghunandan R perfectly complements the film’s emotional beats. Karthikeyan Mani’s screenplay is tight, emotionally rich, and layered with subtle satire.
While the plot is simple on the surface, Madras Matinee delivers powerful commentary on storytelling itself—how fiction becomes truer when rooted in real lives, and how every common man has an uncommon story.
⭐ Final Rating: 8.5/10 – A touching tribute to the lives we overlook and the stories waiting to be told.
