Hey Ram (2000) English Subtitle - Kamal Haasan & Shah Rukh Khan Shine in Hey Ram (2000)

Kamal Haasan's Hey Ram (2000) is an ambitious epic historical drama that delves into India's Partition, the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, and communal violence. The film, starring Kamal Haasan, Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, and Hema Malini, presents an alternate historical perspective, blending real events with fictional storytelling.

Set against the turbulent backdrop of 1946-1948, the story follows Saket Ram (Kamal Haasan), an archaeologist whose life is upended during the Direct Action Day riots in Calcutta. After witnessing his wife's brutal murder, he spirals into vengeance and joins a group conspiring to kill Gandhi, whom they blame for the nation's partition woes. However, a series of events, including his bond with his Muslim friend Amjad (Shah Rukh Khan), forces him to rethink his ideology, leading to a dramatic transformation.

The film’s cinematography (by Tirru), gripping screenplay, and Ilaiyaraaja’s soul-stirring music create a powerful emotional impact. Haasan, in his dual role as writer-director-actor, masterfully portrays Saket Ram’s psychological turmoil.

Despite its box-office failure, Hey Ram received critical acclaim and won three National Film Awards. It was India’s official entry for the 2000 Oscars and screened at international film festivals like Toronto and Locarno.

A thought-provoking and visually stunning film, Hey Ram is a must-watch for history enthusiasts and serious cinephiles. Kamal Haasan’s fearless storytelling and strong performances make it one of Indian cinema’s most underrated masterpieces.
