Costao (2025) English Subtitle - Gold Smuggling, Sacrifice and Justice Based on True Events
Costao is an upcoming Hindi biographical crime drama directed by Sejal Shah, based on the real-life heroics of Goa customs officer Costao Fernandes. Set in the tense, corruption-ridden landscape of 1990s Goa, this ZEE5 original, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, promises a gripping blend of patriotism, sacrifice, and raw crime investigation.
In the lead role, Nawazuddin Siddiqui brings intensity and gravitas as Costao Fernandes, a lone officer who defies odds to expose a powerful gold smuggling cartel. Known for his nuanced portrayals, Siddiqui seems the perfect fit to embody the quiet resilience and moral strength of a man who risked everything for justice. Opposite him, Priya Bapat plays Maria Fernandes, Costao’s wife, grounding the story emotionally as his personal life begins to fracture under the weight of duty.
Written by Bhavesh Mandalia and Meghna Srivastava, the screenplay reportedly dives deep into the psychology of smuggling networks, political influences, and the personal cost of uprightness. Supporting performances from Kishore (as D’Mello), Hussain Dalal, and Mahika Sharma add further complexity to the narrative, bringing in elements of betrayal, moral ambiguity, and loyalty.
Shot on location in Goa, the film’s visual storytelling—helmed by cinematographer Rafey Mahmood—captures the beauty of the coastal state while exposing the dark underbelly of crime. Editor Unnikrishnan Payoor Parameswaran ensures a sharp narrative flow, keeping tension high throughout.
Costao is more than just a crime drama—it’s a tribute to unsung heroes. By focusing on real events, the film also sheds light on the forgotten chapters of India's anti-smuggling efforts in the 90s, a time when gold smuggling was at its peak due to economic instability.
Produced by Bhanushali Studios Limited and Bombay Fables Motion Pictures, the film is set to stream exclusively on ZEE5 starting 1 May 2025. With its rich narrative, socially relevant theme, and a powerhouse cast, Costao looks like one of the year’s most anticipated direct-to-OTT films.
