A remake of Atlee’s 2016 Tamil blockbuster Theri, the film attempts to blend high-octane action with emotional depth. The film follows John D’Silva, a seemingly ordinary bakery owner in Kerala, who lives with his daughter Khushi and close friend Jackie. When a local trafficking gang targets them, John’s violent side emerges, revealing his true identity—DCP Satya Verma, a cop with a dark past. As the narrative unfolds, we learn about Satya’s confrontation with ruthless politician Babbar Sher, his tragic love story with Meera (Keerthy Suresh), and the lengths he must go to protect his daughter.

Varun Dhawan delivers a physically intense performance, convincingly pulling off action sequences but struggling with emotional depth. Keerthy Suresh makes her Bollywood debut but gets limited screen time. Jackie Shroff plays an intimidating villain, though his role feels underutilized. Wamiqa Gabbi, as Khushi’s teacher, adds intrigue but lacks strong character development.

Director Kalees attempts to stay loyal to Theri while adding Bollywood-style elements, yet the storytelling feels rushed. The film’s emotional core, essential for a revenge drama, fails to resonate as effectively as the original.

Released on December 25, 2024, Baby John opened to mixed reviews, with critics praising its action but criticizing its weak emotional depth and predictable plot. The film failed to attract audiences, becoming a box office bomb, earning around ₹56-59 crore against a massive ₹160-180 crore budget.
